Better Home Garden is an independent website about home gardening, soil, plants, watering and lawn care. We publish guides for home gardeners growing vegetables, flowers and lawns in their own yards, with a focus on practical, climate-aware guidance on planning a garden, preparing soil, growing plants and caring for a lawn.

Who we are

Better Home Garden launched in its current form in 2026 and is run by a small, independent editorial team. We are an online-only publication. We are not owned by, and do not work on behalf of, any manufacturer, brand or retailer, and no company reviews or approves our guides before they are published.

Websites that used the domain name betterhomegarden.net in earlier years were run by other people and are not connected to the current site or its content.

What we cover

Our guides are organized into these sections: Gardening Basics, Plants and Growing, Lawn Care, Garden Tools, Soil and Plant Health and Garden Design. Each guide explains what matters for a given situation, which trade-offs to expect and where its advice stops.

How we research

Our content is written by the Better Home Garden editorial team. We base our guides on university cooperative extension publications, the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for pesticide and water-use guidance, and product labels and manufacturer instructions, and we link to the source when a guide states a figure or a safety point.

We are clear about the limits of our work. Unless an article explicitly describes our own use of a product, our guides are research-based and are not hands-on product tests. We do not invent test results, ratings or statistics. Read our Editorial Policy and How We Review for details.

Safety and scope

Always read and follow the label on fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides; the label is the law in the U.S. Some garden plants are toxic to children and pets. Contact 811 before digging, and check with your local cooperative extension office for advice specific to your climate and soil.
