A raised bed lets you garden in soil you control, with less bending at taller heights. The two main choices are coated steel, which the makers say lasts for decades, and natural cedar, which resists rot without chemical treatment. The five beds below range from a 10.5-inch cedar box to a 29-inch round steel bed you can work standing up.

Every specification on this page comes from the manufacturer’s own product page, checked on 26 October 2026. We have not used these products ourselves, so the picks are based on published specifications only.

How we chose these

  • Material stated: coated steel grade or wood species.
  • Height and footprint or soil capacity published.
  • Assembly method described, and warranty or durability claim given.

Soil capacity is the volume you will need to fill the bed. Taller beds hold much more soil, so budget time and soil for filling.

1. Greenes Fence Classic Cedar Raised Garden Bed (4 x 8 ft): for natural wood and tool-free setup

Greenes Fence makes this bed from solid American cedar boards, which it says naturally resist rot and insects without chemical treatment, rather than laminated panels. The boards slide into routed corner posts with a dovetail system, so assembly needs no tools.

  • Model RC6T21B-C; also sold in 2 x 4, 4 x 4 and 2 x 8 ft and in 14 and 17.5 in heights (Greenes Fence).

Pros: natural wood; tool-free; lowest soil volume for a 4 x 8 here.
Cons: shortest bed here, so more bending; Greenes does not state a warranty on the page.

2. Vego Garden 14″ Tall 4-in-1 Modular Metal Raised Garden Bed: for small yards and flexible shapes

Vego’s 4-in-1 kit builds one of four layouts from the same panels, sized for small to medium backyards. It uses Vego’s VZ 2.0 steel, a steel core coated with zinc, aluminum and magnesium and finished with USDA-compliant paint, which Vego says lasts 20+ years.

  • Vego compares 14-inch beds with shorter 6 to 10 inch beds that need more bending (Vego).

Pros: reconfigurable; coated steel; compact.
Cons: Vego’s page text does not list the footprint or soil capacity for each layout.

  • Also sold in a 29-inch height (Birdies).
  • Limited lifetime warranty.

Pros: six layouts; bracing for a large footprint; safety edge; lifetime warranty.
Cons: footprint and soil volume per layout not in the page text.

4. Vego Garden 17″ Tall Modern 4′ x 8′ Metal Raised Garden Bed: for a front-yard look

The Modern line is Vego’s design-led bed, which Vego suggests may suit HOA-conscious front yards (it advises checking local rules). The 4 x 8 ft, 17-inch bed holds about 45 cubic feet of soil, has an open bottom for drainage and root access, and has pre-drilled holes in the top panels for stringing a 1 ft by 1 ft planting grid.

  • FDA-compliant powder coating; 100% recyclable steel panels and posts (Vego).
  • No painting, sealing or staining needed, per Vego.

Pros: quick assembly; planting-grid holes; clean look.
Cons: a fixed rectangle, not modular.

5. Birdies Round Metal Raised Garden Bed (29″ tall): for gardening without bending, or a fruit tree

Birdies describes its 29-inch round bed as a bend-free option for crops and fruit trees. It is 39.3 inches wide and holds 20 cubic feet of soil, with the same ZAM 100 steel, rolled safety edge and stainless hardware as Birdies’ modular beds.

  • Also sold in a 15-inch height (Birdies).

Pros: tallest bed here; small footprint; lifetime warranty.
Cons: small growing area for the soil it needs.
